Xining is one of the best places to take a train or flight to Tibet, because it is close to Tibet and tourists do not need to spend too much time a flight or train.
By flights – Taking off at noon and arriving in Lhasa in afternoon, the flights from Xining to Lhasa give tourists enough time to take a rest and acclimatize to the high altitude after arriving in Tibet. Some of our customers like to take a stroll around their hotels after arriving in Lhasa in afternoon. It takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes and costs between 2200 and 2800 RMB to fly from Xining to Lhasa.
By train – It takes only 22 hours to go to Lhasa from Xining by train. Tourists can admire the sceneries and various wild animals during the train ride. If you are keen to take a train trip to Tibet, Xining is the most recommended starting station.
Yes. If you have at least one day in Xining before departing for Tibet, it is suggested to pay a visit to the Qinghai Lake, the largest inland salt-water lake in China. Qinghai means “Green Sea” in Chinese language. The lake is so large, and its water is salt, so ancient people thought it was sea, rather than lake. The sea-sized lake is still “growing” larger year by year.
Besides beautiful lake view, the Qinghai Lake is a paradise for bird watching. Over 200 species of birds were found in the lake area. Summer is the best season to admire birds on Qinghai Lake.
It takes around 5 hours for a round car ride between Xining and Qinghai Lake, so it is possible to visit the Qinghai Lake during daytime and go back to Xining to stay overnight.
If you have 1 day in Xining, it is suggested to take a round day trip from Xining to Qinghai Lake, the most renowned tourist attraction in Qinghai Province. The lake view and lovely birds are the highlights of this huge salt-water lake. Take a telescope with you if it is possible. It takes around 7 hours to finish this round day trip. If it is ok for you to get up at 7:00 am or earlier, you can extend this trip to Chaka Salt Lake, where is renowned for the salt sculptures. By adding this lake, your day trip can be prolonged to 11 hours.
If you have 2 days, it is suggested to take another day trip to Ta’er Monastery, a monastery of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism. The frescos, statuses of Buddha made from Tibetan butter and dolls stuffed by cotton or wool are the essence of art in the monastery.
We went to Tibet at June 2019,our tour was arrange by Amy from Chengdu, she is very kind and helpful, we have a lot of questions before the trip, she can answer them with full of patience.
First day, our driver and tour guide waited at airport and drive us to our lovely hotel (4 star himalaya hotel). the tour guide Mr Ba Sang from Tibet is very caring and helpful throughout the journey. Everything is well planned and taken care of. He brings us to nice local restaurants and have a good taste of local cuisine. In temple, we given detail explanation on the culture and explain to us the practice of the people. Experience at Everest Base camp is unforgettable, we able to see the remarkable view of everest mountain.
Tibet is a place you will want to visit again and again.
Driver Mr Xia is a good, responsible and steady driver. He drives us safely to all locations.
Hopefully next time we can join the Ling Zhi trip to see flowers in spring time.

Had a 10 days trip to Tibet with Asia Odyssey. The staffs and tour guide are very nice and helpful. Kay was the person who got in touch with me, and she assisted me with all the document and trip information. Honestly, she made me a lot more comfortable with the trip since I just found this company on the internet and I wasn't sure if it was a legit thing. She also came picked me up from the airport and sent me all the way to the hotel. She is truly a sweet and warm girl! :) Besides, the tour guide and driver are very friendly, they provided a lot of information for me to understand and discover Tibet from a different angle. Our trip was 10 days in Tibet, with a rest and sightseeing day in Lhasa (Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple). Our amazing guide Phuntsok handled travel, permit, and hotel logistics with expertise and flexibility. He was a 5-star guide in every way- making sure we had everything we wanted and needed, giving cultural + historical context to the sights we saw, and having lots of fun with us.
We had 2 drivers (the van and a truck for our bikes) who were both very helpful, friendly, and good company.

Anfangs April 2019 flog ich von Zürich-Chengdu nach Xining Dort blieb ich 2 Nächte ( anklimatisieren) und nahm nachher den Abendzug nach Lhasa. Etwas skeptisch betr. Sauberkeit! Alles war tadellos und die Abteils 1. Klasse (unbedingt) sehr sauber. Nach 20 Std. Fahrt sah es dann anders aus! Mein Tipp gilt für die ganze Tibetreise, viel trinken (pro 1000m Höhe.1 Liter) kein Alkohol, kein Stress, Diamox und Nasenspray. Ich hatte die ganze Zeit überhaupt kein Problem ( der Körper signalisiert es frühzeitig)
In Lhasa begann meine Overlandtour, die Gruppe bestand aus 2 Personen! Super! Die ganze Reise war wunderschön, alles gut organisiert. Ein Dankeschön geht an Asia Odyssey travel, besonders an Claire, meine Betreuerin ( die sehr gut deutsch sprich)t und an den Guide Pingzhuo, ein ganz toller, lieber Kerl!
Ich kann die Tour in jeder Beziehung nur empfehlen!
